Definitions
Modernism: regarded with suspicion and sceptisism, it refers to an attitude, later it was associated with avant-garde, it meant different things in different time periods, each generaton had its own avant-garde
Impressionism: from Monets painting “Impressions: Sun Rise”, detached observation, not very emotional
Symbolism: T.S. Elliott, poems, a suggestion of feelings and experiences, they wanted their work to evoke, not describe
Expressionism: extremes of human feelings (ex. distorted images)
Exoticism: borrowing of other cultures perceived as different (ex. Debussy, Ravel)
Scales: whole tone, octatonic (alteration of whole and half tones), pentatonic (many different kinds in the world), anhemitonic (no semitones), modes
